Quick Notes on Lower Back Surgery

As humans we are totally dependent on our spinal cord and what we call ‘our back’. We are able to run, jump, move swiftly and do everything we want because of our back. This sounds very obvious, but for many people with lower back problems this is not so obvious anymore. Because of their lower back problems they are not able to live a normal life. In many cases back problems are reversible because they are caused by degeneration or erosis, a lower back surgery can often help you overcome your complaints.

Our nerves travel through our body with the help of the spinal cord. When the spinal cord gets obstructed, the spines will put pressure on the nerves and this results in pain in your lower back, but also in your legs or other places. This type of obstruction is called a spinal stenosis and can be treated with the help of a lumbar laminectomy surgery. A laminectomy is only performed by a specialized neurosurgeon and this surgery will help you get rid of your pain.

The neurosurgeon will make a small incision near the place of the spinal stenosis. After the incision he has to carefully move the muscles of the back aside to get to the spinal cord. Now the surgeon will try to remove the part of the bones that is causing the compression on the spinal cord. If he finds a bulged disc than he will also try to remove this as well. During surgery the surgeon will frequently ask for an X-Ray to see if he is still working at the right spot. Generally this surgery is done under complete narcosis because you should not make a sudden move with your legs or arms. After the surgery you have to lay on your back for 6 hours in order for the wound to recover. After the operation you will probably stay for 1 or 2 days in the hospital so they can clear out any complications.
