But even without a gym to go to, there are many ways to burn a few extra calories.  A good start is to get a pedometer to show how many steps you take each day and in turn, how many calories you have burnt.  Easy things like taking the stairs at work or elsewhere instead of an elevator can add to your calorie burn for the day.  If it isn’t too cold out, you could also walk or bike to whatever your destination may be.
Purchasing a stepper or making one can be beneficial.  Instead of sitting on the couch while watching TV at night, exercise on your stepper instead.  Having a distraction like a television show or music while you are exercising is helpful.  Working out while you are doing something that you would have been doing anyway, such as watching TV, makes exercising less of a chore and doesn’t take up any extra time.

If you are a member of a fitness club that has a pool, there are several workouts that you may not have thought about.  Adding a gym sport like water polo or swimming can make your body work in different ways than it is normally used to and therefore waking up muscles that might not be getting enough exercise in your current gym routine.  If you are currently searching for a gym to join, I would suggest researching if the gyms in your area have a pool, as it can make a wonderful addition to your workout.

Because it takes place in the water, most people deem the idea of working out in a pool as too easy.  I certainly thought that way at first, but after hopping in and taking a water aerobics class, I couldn’t believe how much of a workout it was.  The resistance that the water offers during your movements are like using a resistance band or a lighter weight for the entire workout.  The realization of just how hard you are working creeps up on you.

After taking the class, I discovered my gym had a group who play water polo.  I had never played it before, but it has fast become my favorite gym sport.  It was like basketball in water.  Just the simple act of treading water and trying to the pass the ball is extremely difficult.  I now participate in weekly games that actually get me wanting go back to the gym.

Swimming laps can be a great workout on its own or a way to unwind and finish up a workout, depending on your intensity and speed.  Quick laps get your heart pumping and every inch of your body working.  Slower laps can almost be a substitute for stretching, as the water allows more mobility and better ways to stretch.

Having a pool in your gym is a great asset and makes you feel better about paying your monthly dues.  Its a great workout and gym sports like water polo (or even Marco Polo) are really fun and a great way to meet other members of your gym.  Have fun and be safe!
